No One Starts Out Great

Whenever trying something new for the first time, we’re not going to be as good at it as we might have hoped. And the reality is we’re probably not going to be very adept at it until we’ve done it at least a few hundred times. Learning a new skill isn’t something that comes easily or quickly for anyone.

So instead of being disappointed that we’re better than anyone the first bunch of time we’re learning a new skill, a better way to go is to 1) say to yourself: “This is just practice; this isn’t about my worthiness.” And 2) as you are moving toward competence, get the support from others and God that you are loved no matter what does or doesn’t happen. Say to yourself: “I am loved even though I am not good at this yet.” Finally, 3) just keep doing it as Nike says. Over time, you’ll develop not only the ability but the confidence in being able to do something well…just not at first!
